I appreciate Harner’s approach because he does not diminish the varied ways of doing shamanistic travel. This book is the starting place for his techniques which primarily rely on drums or rattles. It is an easy to follow book with a very applicable and straightforward technique. A 10 year old could do it.

If the book works for you, you can contact the foundation that Harner has and find local groups or techers to build on what the book teaches.

The music on this CD is very soothing and very relaxing. I bought this CD and decided to play it in my car and make it a sacred place so to speak. On the fourth day after having this CD play in my car I was running late taking my daughter to an appointment. A car changed into my lane without looking back causing me to slam on my brakes or rear end that car. With my brakes fully locked I went into a skid but was able to remain calm and correct the wheel but could not stop. In mere seconds I was beside this car and was just about to complete the collision (we’ve all been there where you think this is it, I’m going to hit this person and I’ve done all I can do) when at the very last moment before we were going to impact he was able to move over more into the next lane. This allowed me to complete my stop. This could very well have been a serious accident if someone above had not looked out for all of us involved. So I would say to everyone..while you should not meditate in your car of course (that would be silly) don’t forget to say a prayer of protection during daily travels. Listening to this CD in your car is not a bad idea turned out to be for me my saving grace I think.

Oh to journey far with this music
I love to close my eyes and soar
this is beautiful music and it
    leaves you feeling renewed and
    reborn. Highly recommended.

Guys, This is a wonderful CD for yoga, meditation, accupunture and massage sessions. IT is so very soothing, this cd takes you on mental journeys, but always to a peaceful joyous place, you open your eyes (if they were closed) energetic and filled with LIGHT. Or you sit in a relaxed state of mind, opening your chakra centers. (my expereince) quite chakra cleansing. I recommend this CD. Great arrangement on CD, great sounds. Thanks gentlemen.

  4. Lee says

Wasn’t sure about this one till I put it on. SO HAPPY WITH IT! The artists have done a great job pulling in so many sounds to still create a soothing and soulful mix. I also think the lengths of each track are great for meditation or massage. Another album that I am loving is Drum Medicine by the same artists.

  5. Reiling says

Peaceful, powerful, beautiful, tranformational, transportive. This CD is almost worn out I play it so often. I journey nearly every day in my personal spiritual practice to this CD and play it before and during experiential shamanic classes that I teach. As a shamanic practitioner, teacher and author of several books on shamanism and energy healing, Seeing in the Dark: Claim Your Own Shamanic Power Now and in the Coming Age, Energy for Life: Connect with the Source (Next Step), and Inner Power: Six Techniques for Increased Energy & Self-Healing I have a deep appreciation for music such as this that can aid us in transforming our minds, bodies and lives. I love all of the Gordon’s CD’s and this one is my favorite.

  6. Christy says

My favorite read of the summer. Great historical fiction, vivid characters, well-constructed tale. And I learned a lot from it too. My favorite of the three books by Gordon that I’ve read.

  7. Ngoy says

My good friend Mario strongly recommended me “The Physician”, even if he knew a physician’s life wasn’t my cup of tea.
I’m grateful he convinced me to read it. I was so trapped by Mr. Noah Gordon story that I went immediately to the bookstore and bought “Shaman” and “Choices”.
IMHO “Shaman” is the best of the trilogy.

This is the story of two members of the Cole family: Rob Sr. & Rob Jr.

The story, situated in the period around 1830-1870, starts following Rob Sr.’s life since his forced emigration from Scotland to America and is reconstructed thru his personal diary as discovered and read, after his death, by his son Rob Jr.
Rob Sr. initiates his medical practice at Boston’s Irish ghetto and meets Oliver Wendell Holmes, precursor of medical prophylaxis.
Later he continues his migration going into Illinois and stopping at Holden’s Crossing where he starts a new life as rural physician.
There he builds his home, start his relationship with the Sauk Native Americans people, fall in love, heal & marry Sarah, have a child who will contract scarlatina and lose his hearing.
At this point Rob’s Jr. life is the second main thread of the narration, following his education and fervent desire to be a physician as his father.
Both threads will conflux at the Civil War period.

Historical reconstruction is paramount, showing domestic every day details, political issues, educational issues, medical issues and cultural issues with deepness and commitment. This aspect of the novel is by far better than the period reconstruction done by Mr. Gordon in “The Physician”.

A much recommended read for those interested in historical subjects, daily life period reconstruction and medical practice. Enjoy this great novel!

I was blown away by Gordon’s “Physician”, a good five stars. The sequal “Shaman” proved disppointing to me for two reasons. First, because of the extensive Civil War content—once more we fight the battle of Gettysburg! Admittedly this may be a personal reaction because I’ve spent 20 years teaching U.S. history to undergraduates and am quite familiar with the period the book encompasses. “Physician” was far more exotic and fascinating because I know much less about the time period (centuries earlier) in which it was set.

The second reason, however, was that Gordon divided his forces in “Shaman”, having two heroes—the father and the son. In Physician, his main character was Rob J. Cole, who didn’t have to share the limelight with a father, and emerged as a stronger and more unforgettable hero.

  9. Kuyper says

This is a very interesting book about medicine and history. I enjoyed it very much so that I gave it to a doctor friend and He loved it!1

  10. Kinney says

Hii I havent read the book but I am sure it is going to be good. Very fast shipping from seller. THANKS

  11. Miyamoto says

Andre Matos seems to have grown out of the hyperactive power metal style exemplified in the excellent album “Ritual.” Here, the songs are slower, with some more piano, and much harder to digest. In fact I disliked this album until I listened to each song maybe five times. It slowly began growing on me and I noticed the subtle melodies and aspects in it that I find now. If you are a big Angra/Ritual fan, or a power metal fan, I guarantee you, you will be disappointed by this album at first. But if you really give it a shot, it will grow on you.

Turn Away is just excellent, but I was so encaptivated by the style of Ritual that I had to open my mind a little before I liked it. Next comes Reason, another oustanding song with a great chorus and some heavy guitar parts. “More” is the most accessable song and also happens to be a cover. Innocence is a song which is the favorite for a lot of people, its really beautiful with a great piano intro that just sticks to your mind. After that are two oustanding songs “Scarred Forever” and the interesting experimental “in the night.”

Then the album takes a *slight* downturn with a few sleepers such as Rough Stone and Iron Soul, but Trail of Tears and Born To Be are decent. Overall, this is a good album and has a lot of replay value. I am very impressed with the style change, and Shaaman has managed to slow down the tempo a bit and take away some of the power metal, and still release a great album.

  12. Ireland says

In American music, there’s maybe 2 great songs per album. Even in European metal, not every song is good on every album (there’s some exceptions). Shaman’s Reason has 10 songs. 10 of them are amazing.

I’m not what you would call a “fan” of Shaman (or Angra), but I listen to both and enjoy both. So I’m not gonna go into massive amounts of detail.

What I will say is that I enjoyed the overall feeling of “melodic metal influenced by gothic rock.” To me, that’s what this sounds like. So if you enjoy bands like Sentenced or Katatonia, you’ll enjoy this – even though the instruments don’t follow the gothic style. The music is more hard-rockish with lots of keyboard intros to enhance the emotions the listener will feel.

There’s several sad piano sounds, especially in the 3 “ballads” – Innocence, Rough Stone, and Born to Be. These 3 and the 80’s cover song “More” are some of my favorites. Its kind of a funny album; sometimes, the ballads will act as your favorite songs, but at other times, you’re gonna crave to listen to the faster Trail of Tears (another of my favorites).

For anyone who’s a Highlord, Dark Moor, or Rhapsody fan, you’re not gonna hear tons of orchestral arrangements or super fast songs on here. This album is more so where gothic rock meets melodic metal.

Though most of the songs are around the same speed and the same emotions, you still won’t get bored. Think of Heavenly’s Dust to Dust album, if you will. For some reason, these 2 albums just do a better job of holding the listener’s attention.

Even for fans of classic rock, alternative rock, etc. – this would be a GREAT starting point for people wanting to listen to European metal. Soilwork, In Flames, Mnemic – the screaming/growling/grunting can easily turn people off.

Bottom line – make an effort to listen to and enjoy this album. It’s a lot different than most of what’s out there. Try downloading samples someplace if you’re the picky kind. This is one album that’ll always have to come with me on my one-week vacations. (I have over 400 CDs – most of which are European metal. See my other reviews to get a sense of who I listen to.)

  13. Shlam says

After the excellent masterpiece Ritual (debut),
with this second release,André Matos(vocals and keyboards) and his 3 mates(Luís Mariutti on bass, Ricardo Confessori on drums who are former Angra members plus Hugo Mariutti on guitar)proved that their band are right alternative for people who are Angra fans and hate Eduardo Falaschi (Me, for example). I still don’t know why a colleague from my college hated it until today .He liked “Reason” and “Innocence” only. I totaly disagree with him.
To me Reason (the cd)is almost as good as the debut.
The only bad track here is “More”, which is an 80’s cover. It didn’t sound well. Hugo used some more heavy riffs than in “Ritual”, but the melodic metal traits were mantained, happily.
Like the previous one, the band didn’t attach to the double bass drums(Trail of tears is the exception). The song variety continues.
“Innocence” will always be my favourite overall: as outstanding as “Fairy Tale”, I love the melody set up for these lines ” I held my tears, one day comes after another”, undiscribable.
The title track is amazing too: there is a beautiful and well peformed solo by Hugo in 2:37. Check it out.
“Turn away” is the heaviest, but still melodic.Hugo’s work calls attention here too. I think that he’s as skillful as Angra’s Kiko Loureiro.
Trust me,this cd isn’t a waste of money.
André Matos and partners: keep this efficience and you will continue as my today’s Angra replacement. Thank you.

  14. Dootson says

If Andre Matos and the rest of Shaman’s goal was to distance themselves from the Angra sound for which they are best known, then they certainly accomplished it with Reason. Shaman’s excellent debut album, Ritual, was very much an Angra-style power metal album, so I thought I knew what to expect from Reason. Instead, the band has taken its sound in a totally new direction.

Reason is definitely not the power metal we’re used to. It’s still quite heavy at times, but it tends more towards a melodic rock sound. And I’m not talking about Journey-inspired, Frontiers Records melodic rock either. Yes, keyboards are prevalent, but this isn’t a big hooks and catchy chorus kind of album. Call it a “serious” hard rock album with an obvious appreciation for melody. It reminds me at times of some of Threshold and Vanishing Point’s less metallic moments. The band’s inclusion of South American musical elements is, as always, a nice touch that helps set them apart from the crowd.

I have mixed emotions about this album. On the one hand, it’s good to see the band challenge themselves and defy expectations, and it’s hard to argue with the results – this is a very impressive album. On the other hand, knowing that the band is capable of recording a top notch power metal album yet chooses not to do so is frustrating.

From what I can tell, this seems to be an excellent guide to shamanism and to ancient philosophy. I am rereading and referencing this book on a regular basis.

Wow is want comes to mind after reading this book. I feel so enlightened to all of my surroundings my relationships with humans, animals, plants etc.
I found the book to have been written in terms that are easily understood and offers so much information to enhance your everyday life. I feel that books present themselves to you when you may have a leasson in life to learn and from this book I have grown and am realizing the shaman within my self. So if you you are finding this book or it is finding you like it was in my case, enjoy and expect a wonderful awakening in your life.

  18. Pranolo says

Ok, I’m not an expert on Shamanism by any means. I have been interested but the drumming and journeying part wasn’t really resonating with me. This book is exactly what I have been looking for! It explains Shaman techniques in ways that I can understand and, most importantly, actually use. While reading the chapter on dreaming and how to use it to heal, I used it to get rid of my hiccups which were really beginning to get on my nerves. I also used it the next day to get rid of a pain I had in my side from stressing a muscle.
This is a book that gives tools that can actually be used anytime, anyplace. I am very glad I chose this book!
