If author Reid had titled his book “A Description of Various World Heathcare Approaches” he would have been far more accurate than the title he chose. While providing much information on overseas sytems, there is no attempt at critical anaylses of which aspects of these various systems could or could not work in the U.S., although there seems to always be the presumption they are superior to our own. The book starts off on shakey ground by highlighting the World Health Organization’s Rankings of various healthcare systems around the world. For those in the know, this WHO study is fraught with flawed and mis-leading information. For instance, WHO ranks U.S. healthcare well down the list based on Life Expectancy statistics. However healthcare systems are only one of several key factors in longevity. Heavy influencers other than healthcare include a society’s diet, degree of obesity, auto accidents, homicide rates. This is proven by the fact that in the U.S. Asian-American womens’ life expectancy is 87 years, while African-American male life expectancy is 69 years. Despite both living under the same health care system. Again, infant mortality rates in the WHO Study are meaningless because the U.S. counts all pre-natal deaths, whereas Germany only counts deaths of fetuses 1 pound or more, and some countries don’t count any pre-natal deaths. Knowing these things made reading each succeeding chapter more open to suspicion as to its practical application to the U.S. healthcare scene. The author really seemed to have an agenda.

How To Repair The PS3 Yellow Light Of Death
The DVD is average at best, but the movie is excellent. Mathew Modine, who has been around for a long time and has been in his share of flicks, portrays a young high school wrestler in this 1985 flick. He has to wrestle with his share of problems on and off the wrestling mat.The movie shows what a prep wrestler goes through as he prepares for matches and battles weight issues to keep himself in a certain weight class…a single pound over could keep him from competing.Of course,Modine’s character has to make plenty of moves off the mat as well as…let’s just say he has an older woman issue. A must see for former or current high school wrestlers. And for you “love bugs” out there, you’ll love it, too.
This was a gift for my brother who turned 59. It was his favorite movie and as I knew he loved the gift. Also the sound track was an added bonus. As always Amazon is the only way to find great gifts. Reliable and fast shipping.
The movie is really five stars, but this release has problems. First of all the movie needs to be remastered, as it is a bit grainy and faded. Additionally, the case is cardboard and is not very durable. There is not even a decent video menu. But, it is a great move, especially if you were a wrestler.
I received the movie and it was loose in the case and scratched… The case was also broken! Amazon should have used a padded envelope instead of two pieces of cardboard….
I ordered this for my husband and recieved a DVD that is far to scratched to even play in a player. Unfortunatly my husband never told me how bad it was so I didn’t think I could returned it after so long. Basically he never even had a chance to watch it. comes in cheap cardboard box case, no wonder its in bad shape.
A brave discussion on the subject too important to ignore. Whether you like it or not, healthcare will shape your future ether through the quality of care you receive at the hospital, or through your paycheck. Mr. Reid presents a global comparison of healthcare systems while addressing our fears of change outright. He doesn’t disregard the 17.5% sales tax of Britain or the longer waiting lines of Canada’s healthcare system. But rather, he reviews what other countries achieve and what they pay for an equitable and affordable healthcare system.
Mr Reid falls short of specifics for an American universal healthcare system. I don’t blame him for that and I don’t expect him to write what a Ph.D. in healthcare economics could write. Ried is a journalist, and as a journalist he asks and answers the five essential questions for any journalist who observes healthcare systems: who, what, where, when and why. If I wanted a 1000 page analysis of a PH.D I would pay hundreds maybe thousands for a copy of something from Harvard. Its up the reader to pick and choose from what Reid presents or disregard everything he says.

I was very impressed with Mr. Reid’s account of health care systems in other countries and how they relate to our own flawed system in the United States. He represented the different systems in a clear, easy to understand way and not only spoke of the good ideas but also pointed out flaws in those systems. I am a registered nurse working in Arizona and I see the injustice of our health care system on a daily basis. Those that can afford good health insurance do not see any reason for the US health care system to change. They are perfectly happy with the status quo and really have no thought or concern for those that are not as fortunate as themselves. It is amazing how calus some people are. Mr. Reid has done an excellent job of pointing out which countries have made a commitment to provide healthcare to all the people and not just a few. I love the quote he has used by Professor Uwe Reinhardt, “Every nation’s health care system reflects that nation’s basic moral values. Once a nation decides that it has a moral obligation to provide health care for everybody, then it can build a system to meet that obligation.” Alright people of the United States it is time for a change to meet the health needs of all our citizens. Great book and a must read with all that is happening in the United States today.
Mr. Reid’s book is totally fascinating and informative. With all the political proganda and special interest blitz that the American public is receiving concerning the pending health care overhaul, we, the public, do not know what to think. “The Healing of America” tells us where we Americans stand in the world on health care and exposes us to the universal health care systems that are available to the citizens of every other developed and wealthy country except the United States which does not have one. Mr. Reid points out that we do not have a health care system as such, but we have a hodge podge of many systems that represent every known health care system used in the world. Ours is the most expensive with very poor results. Mr. Reid tells us what is needed for a unified health care system and that it need not be a single payer or “socialized medicine” system. Contrary to popular American beliefs, most universal health care systems use private providers and private insurance companies. The exception is, that no where but in the USA are insurance companies allowed to profit on the basic health care plans provided in their countries. Mr. Reid points out the basic conflict of interest between providing for the patient and for the investor. He tells of the thousands of people that die each year because they are uninsured and cannot afford insurance or are uninsurable by insurance company standards. He points out how inane it is that American health care insurance companies insure people and then when they get sick try in every way to deny claims to the point of cancelling coverage. The companies make profit by denying claims. That is the reason their administrative costs are about 20 cents out of every dollar taken in.
“The Healing of America” is an outstanding book and is the most enlightening thing I have read in a long time. I wish every person in our country could read it. It should certainly be required reading for our Congress before anything is done in health care legislation. I dare say Mr. Reid has said more in 250 pages than the House of Representatives have said in some 2,000 on the subject of health care.
This is the best book I’ve read that compares the US health system to others around the globe. If we’re truly to improve on our system, it would help to understand other systems, their strengths and weaknesses. This book is very readable; I am generally a fiction reader but this book was so engaging I couldn’t put it down. Instead of demonizing the French or German or Japanese systems, this book clearly and engagingly describes how the systems work and where they don’t work. After reading this book, I don’t think anyone would think we have the best heath care in the world nor would they disparage other countries’ health plans.
works wonderfully – enough fill to warm a thin 5 year old in single digit weather.
I needed new snowpants near the end of the season. These came and did the job. My son likes the bib style. They went on easily and held up well.
I bought this & a similar larger size(10) for my kids & have been quite pleased so far. They use it at the playground during recess & also for skiing. No problems seen so far…
Haven’t used this product yet. I ordered when we had the snowstorm in Indiana. I couldn’t find any snowbibs in stores and could not find anything reasonably priced on the internet. This product was the only reasonably priced product I could find. [Even though it shipped quickly, the snow was already gone when it arrived.] It looks to be of excellent quality and has a lot of nice features. I like that it has an adjustable waist (velcro straps on each side) and the shoulder straps are also adjustable–I think we’ll be able to use these bibs for at least 2 years due to the adjustability. Highly recommend.
I started reading this trilogy because the first book was free. I quickly became hooked. The hero is definitely put through the wringer. I did like it that the ending was not a fairy tale happily ever after but still satisfying. I am on to Robin Hobb’s next trilogy as soon as I can press One Click.
Haven’t been this disappointed since I got sucked into George Martin. Love fantasy and there’s so little good stuff out there. Great concept, first two books in the triology were good to great, last one was horrible. It went on and on and on. Occasionally it’s good if something happens in a book, and precious little happens in this book until the last 30 pages. Not recommended. Go read the lies of Locke Lamora instead.
This series was a wonderful read for me and I really enjoyed the creativity of the author.
This is hands down one of the best trilogies I have ever read. The Tawny Man series is also highly recommended. Without giving away spoilers I will just say that I found this story to be original and very unique. The characters have become some of the most memorable to me in any fantasy series that I have read. This trilogy will always be among my top favorites and I cannot disagree more with the negative reviews on this book. Definitely worth the read…
The first two books in this series were awesome. I usually dislike when the hero gets “reset” and has to start from nothing, especially multiple times. However, Hobb did a fine job with the initial books.
Assassin’s Quest ruined it all. Nothing ‘exciting’ happens during this book. Walking, talking to one’s self, more walking, and finally wrapping up 3 books worth of questions in the span of a few pages made me almost sorry I’d read it.
It was well written, but ended so horribly I’d suggest anyone interested in the trilogy stop after reading the first two.
